Madhur Bhandarkar objects to Chandni Bar Returns; producers claim legal rights secured : Bollywood News

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar raised objections to the use of the title The return of the Chandni bar from producer Sandeep Singh and director Ajay Bahl. The director, who directed the original Bar Chandni (2001) starring Tabu, complained to the Indian Film Producers’ Association (IMPPA), claiming that the makers of the sequel were using his registered title without his consent.

The 2001 drama, which won several national awards and cemented Bhandarkar’s place in Indian cinema, remains one of his most acclaimed works. In his complaint, Bhandarkar alleged that the title Bar Chandni belongs to him and that Singh and Bahl proceeded without proper authorization. Following his complaint, IMPPA reportedly asked the creators to stop using the title until the issue was resolved.
Producers respond with legal clarifications
In response, Sandeep Singh’s Legend Studios released an official statement, disputing Bhandarkar’s claims and asserting that they hold all rights necessary to proceed with the project. The studio specified that it had acquired the option rights to the title from the original producers of Bar Chandnirepresented by the late R. Mohan’s wife, Lata Mohan Iyer, who is listed as the owner in the Government of India Trademark Registry.
Co-producer Vishal Gurnani said, “Sandeep Singh’s Legend Studios has acquired the option rights of the said title from the original producers, who are also the trademark owners and intellectual property owners of the original cult classic. Bar Chandni (2001). We would like to point out that no other banner can legally produce said film. Our intellectual property lawyers respond to relevant trade associations and take all necessary steps to validate and protect our legal rights.
The studio also shared the official trademark certificate (application number 1662053, class 41), which lists Lata Mohan Iyer as the owner, thus justifying its claim to the title.
The road ahead for The return of the Chandni bar
Despite Bhandarkar’s objection, Legend Studios confirmed that the sequel is moving forward. The film, directed by Ajay Bahl, is scheduled to release worldwide on December 3, 2026. The makers describe the project as a “reimagined sequel” that will retain the essence of the original while presenting a modern and realistic narrative for contemporary audiences.
Legend Studios maintains that it is committed to honoring the legacy of the 2001 classic while ensuring that the production of The return of the Chandni bar remains legally compliant and respectful of the cultural impact of its predecessor.
