Novak Djokovic Plays Down Monte Carlo Masters Hopes After Eye Infection

Novak Djokovic, world n ° 5, finalist of the recent Miami Masters, said on Sunday that he had no great expectations for the masters of Monte Carlo because he suffered from the effects of an eye infection. Djokovic is a double winner at Monte Carlo but has won no title since he won the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games last summer. Miami’s hard shorts have marked a return to form even if the 37 -year -old lost the final in two sets against Czech adolescent Jakub Mensik.
“I am happy to have found this joy in Miami at least on the ground and, I think, the level of performance,” said former world n ° 1 at a press conference before the tournament.
“Let’s see if I can wear this in the clay.
“It is obviously a completely different surface and I did not have much time to get used to this tournament, so my expectations are not really high for the results here.
“It is more about trying to get games and as much as possible, and obviously try to peak towards the end of the clay season which is, of course, especially in Paris.”
The French Open, which takes place on the red clay of Roland Garros between May 25 and 8, is the second event of the Grand Chelem of the season, after the Australian Open where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before falling back, injured, to Alexander Zverev.
However, the Serb admitted that the eye infection and “a little a viral infection” with which he is dealing in last week made him think twice at Monte Carlo.
“It started during the semi-finals day in Miami and I fought with her in the final, but it’s soothing, I guess.
“I visit the doctor later during the day, so let’s see. It should go.”
Given a first round, Djokovic will face a second round match against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo or another veteran of the circuit, the triple winner of the Grand Chelem Stanislas Wawrinka.
“People talk about my age, but what about him?” He is 40 years old and he always goes strong. I love Stan.
“It would be a good duel of veterans if we find ourselves on the ground.”
