Ray obtained six medals – four gold, silver and bronze – in the games of the University of Khelo India in Gowahati in February of this year. The Ekalabya Puraskar committee including members of the jury from various sectors was unanimous in the Ray selection for the prestigious price at a meeting in Bhubaneswar. Ray will receive a cash price of 7 Lakh rupees – an increase compared to the previous RS 5 Lakh, as well as a quote during a ceremony which will be held on a later date.
The sprinter Dondapati Mrutyam Jayaram and the badminton player Tanvi Patri will also be congratulated for their remarkable performance in various international and national events in their respective fields.
Each of the quotation winners will receive a cash price of 1.5 RS Lakh, against RS 1 Lakh, as well as quotes during the award ceremony.
Ekalabya Puraskar was instituted by a charity body impact in 1993 and managed by the IMFA, the main producer of ferro alloys in the country. It is now considered the most prestigious sporty price in Odisha.
The prize is awarded each year to young Odisha athletes in recognition of their exceptional performance in the previous two years.
Announcing the names of the winners on Sunday, Baijayant Panda, chairman of the Ekalaby Puraskar and trustee committee of the impact, said that the prize had been instituted to encourage young state sportsmen to perform in national and international arenas.
