In a significant development following the tragic disappearance of the famous singer Assamed Zubeen Garg, the authorities arrested his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the northeast festival of India (NEIF), in connection with the incident. Garg died on September 19 after a drowning incident at Lazare Island in Singapore.

Mahanta was apprehended when he arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi from Singapore, while Sharma was arrested in an apartment in Gurugram. The two individuals were then brought to Guwahati for interrogation. The Assam government had formed a special investigation team of 10 members (SIT), led by the special deputy of the DGP GUPTA, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Garg. The SIT had issued opinions to several people, including Mahanta, Sharma, members of the Singapore Assam Association and participants in the festival, asking them to provide statements.
Himanta Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously confirmed that a sharing notice by Interpol had been issued against Mahanta and Sharma, ordering them to appear before the CID by October 6. Following their arrests, the two were returned to 14 days of police custody. Mahanta was intercepted at Delhi airport around midnight, while Sharma was apprehended in a Toll Plaza Gurugram while he was traveling from Rajasthan to Delhi.
Zubeen Garg, a beloved figure of Assam’s musical scene, had traveled to Singapore to perform in Neif, which was then canceled because of his sudden death. Its cremation took place with the honors of the full state in the Kamrup district of Assam on September 23, with thousands of fans meeting to pay tribute to the legendary singer.
