One day after the sudden disappearance of the singer and legendary filmmaker Zubeen Garg, the Assam government announced three days of state mourning from September 20 to 22, 2025. The chief secretary Ravi Kota confirmed the decision on X, declaring: “During this period, there will be no official entertainment, dinners or ceremonial functions.”

The government has expressed condolences in a statement, saying: “The government of Assam expresses a deep shock and pain on the death of Shri Zubeen Garg, singer, filmmaker and cultural icon.” The current “Seva Saptah” programs have been postponed as a brand of respect, although essential service activities such as health camps, tuberculosis support initiatives and planting projects will continue.
Zubeen Garg, 52, died in Singapore while attending the Northeast India Festival. According to the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the singer died during a yacht trip while “swimming in the sea without life vest” alongside 17 others.
The singer’s family, crying for the loss, awaited the arrival of their body in their Kahilipara residence in Gowahati. His father, Mohini Mohan Borthakur, who was in the 1980s and who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, appeared resigned, while Garg’s wife received the people in mourning and benevolent, according to a PTI report.
The chief minister Sarma announced on X that he would go to Delhi to receive fatal remains from Garg and accompany them to Guwahati. “I will go to Delhi later in the day to receive the deadly remains of our beloved Zubeen, who will arrive from Singapore. From there, we will immediately bring him back to Guwahati, hope to 6 am,” he posted. Officials confirmed that the body should arrive in Delhi on Saturday evening and Guwahati on Sunday morning via a special plane.
