Cadillac received the final approval to become the 11th team of Formula 1 of the 2026 season, the director of Motorsport announced on Friday. The American team, supported by TWG Motorsports and General Motors (GM), obtained the green light just over two months after the company concluded an agreement in principle with Formula 1. F1 had previously refused an offer from the American team Andretti, which was linked to Cadillac, but GM increased commitments concerning their involvement in F1 and FIA of adventure.
The engines of the team will initially be provided by Ferrari, but GM has agreed to build its own engine in the future.
Stefano Domenicinicali, president and chief executive officer of Formula 1, said: “As we said in November, General Motors’ commitment to bring a Cadillac team to Formula 1 was an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport.
“I would like to thank GM and TWG Motorsports for their constructive commitment over several months and I can’t wait to welcome the team on the 2026 grid for what will be another exciting year for Formula 1.”
The new team will be a joint venture between GM with Dan Towriss, owner of the American team Andretti Global, a key investor.
The former F1 pilot Michael Andretti is no longer involved in the team he founded, but his father Mario, 1978 F1 world champion, will assume an advisory role.
